Provoking change: Strategies to promote forest users in the Amazon
Have you been working with some interesting and innovative teams that have been effective in achieving a better understanding of how to promote forest users in the Amazon to make more effective use of their natural resources? If so, we would like you to consider joining us (see organizing committee below) at a four day congress: Provoking change: Strategies to promote forest users in the Amazon, November 10-14, 2008 at the Centro Kolping, Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia.
Objective
The objective of the congress is to create a platform for dialogue between scientists, policy makers,
development agencies and representatives of civil society to promote critical thinking and learning
processes by confronting differences between experiences from the field and theory in order to make
contributions to a new operational framework.
This framework seeks to achieve rural development based on the appropriate use, management
and conservation of the Amazon forests.
Congress attendance
The congress will be attended by invited representatives and decision makers of governmental and non-governmental organizations dedicated to forest use and rural development in Latin-America and the Amazon region, smallholders' representative organizations, and members of the scientific community from different disciplines (agriculturalists, anthropologists, foresters, sociologists etc...). In addition, invitations to attend the congress will be issued based on accepted papers. Papers will be considered that arise from ongoing or published work and which address any of the following five general themes:
- Theories on rural development and the role of forests, innovation, adoption, adaptation, learning and change
- Models for development of the Amazon
- Coherency and compatibility of policies for rural development and forest conservation
- Practical case studies with lessons learned from efforts to promote forest users to make more effective use of their natural resources
- Critical analysis of tools, methods and approaches of forest based rural development
