Small-scale forestry in Germany: Fire wood supply and regional added value. New competitions in utilization and aspects of sustainability

concluded 01/2019

Abstract

The project is a collaboration between the University of Freiburg, the University of applied Science Rottenburg and the Öko-Institut e.V. The main objective is to understand whether unutilized fire wood resources in small scale forests are available to reduce the actual and predicted lack of wood supply. To achieve this result, competitions in wood usage and intensities are investigated and specific value chains of fire wood production for small scale forests will be defined. The Chair of Silviculture, University of Freiburg is examining the following questions:

  • Which is the real utilization intensity in small scale forests?
  • Are there differences between the utilization intensity between small scale forests and public forests?
  • How utilization intensity can be assessed concerning other sustainability components like biodiversity?

The project is financed by the Federal Ministery of Food and Agriculture and the central coordinating agency in the area of renewable resources in Germany, FNR (Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V.)
