Sustainable Management of Production Forests at the Commercial Scale in the Brazilian Amazon Project PD 57/99 Rev. 2 (F)

concluded 01/2008

Summary

The aim of this project is to encourage the adoption of sound forest management practices by timber enterprises in the Brazilian Amazon. The central idea is to develop, test, evaluate and transfer a forest management system for use by timber enterprises working under typical production conditions found in terra firme forests of the Brazilian Amazon. The forest management system consists of a set of tools designed to assist a forest enterprise in the planning, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of its operations to achieve sustained economic benefits under current and foreseeable environmental and social conditions. There are silvicultural tools such as for planning timber harvesting and monitoring forest growth, as well as managerial tools for the economic planning and control of the enterprises’ operations. In the first phase (2002–2007) a forest management system prototype is tested and validated at an operational level by two timber enterprises in the eastern Brazilian Amazon. In addition, a system for the monitoring of the ecological, social and economic impacts of the forest management system prototype is developed and tested. The second phase (2007-2010) will be mainly devoted to assisting in the transfer of the validated forest management system and evaluating its ecological, social and economic impacts under consideration of natural, socio-economic and political conditions. The project has the potential to provide the technical background and institutional capacity necessary to improve national and regional policies related to forest management in the Brazilian Amazon, as well as in other Amazon countries.
