Los critérios e indicadores para evaluar el manejo forestal (C&I) facilitan el entendmiento de la sostenibilidad y la comunicación de este tema. Aprovechando este potencial, un creciente n.mero de iniciativas nacionales e internacionales han definido conjuntos de C&I para la certificaci.n, el monitoreo y la auditor.a del manejo forestal. Los distintos usos de los C&I y la diversidad de actores involucrados dan como resultado una gran variedad de exigencias en cuanto a la aplicaci.n de C&I en el campo, su evaluación e interpretación. Estas exigencias tienen que ser consideradas en el proceso de desarrollo de los C&I, a fin de asegurar su viabilidad y aceptaci.n por parte de los usuarios(as). Con base en una revisi.n de las iniciativas en Am.rica Latina, experiencias del Centro Internacional de Investigaci.n Forestal (CIFOR) y consultas a especialistas, en este trabajo se identifican y discuten las exigencias relacionadas con la utilizaci.n de C&I y sus implicaciones practicas.

Methods to evaluate the application of criteria and indicators for the management of tropical forests in Latin America. Criteria and indicators to evaluate forest management (C&I) facilitate the understanding of and communication about sustainability. Thus an increasing number of national and international initiatives defined C&I sets for certification, monitoring and auditing of forest management. Because of the variety of C&I applications and the heterogeneity of C&I users, the demands and requirements on C&I in relation to application, evaluation and interpretation are diverse. To ensure viability and acceptance of C&I based forest management tools, this diversity has to be considered in the process of developing C&I sets. Basing on a revision of C&I initiatives in Latin America, experiences made by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and consultancy of experts, the presented paper identifies and discusses the demands and requirements related to the application of C&I and its practical implications.
