The huge majority of rural development initiatives is defined without adequate participation of its target group, the small farmer. As a consequence, the proposed strategies not always correspond to the reality in the region. Contributions of experts tend to be characterized by a simplifying one-dimensional vision ignoring the demands and capacities of the rural population, as well as the characteristics and fragility of the ecosystems. The article discusses three examples of this one-dimensional vision: (1) the tendency for “big solutions”, which ignores the potential of family agriculture as a motor for development, (2) the limited understanding of what forest is, which ignores the possible contributions of forest types different then primary natural forests, and (3) the mania to use exclusively monetary values for decision making, ignoring the importance of non-monetary values. The article concludes that to avoid the destruction of the complex unit between environment and the small-scale production systems handled by small farmers in the Amazon, the initiatives for forest conservation, should support diversified production systems, avoid homogenization e ensure a sufficient proportion of remaining forests in the landscape through the active participation of smallholders in regional planning. Large-scale production systems, in all forms, cannot correspond adequately to the diversity and complexity of ecosystems and cultures in the Amazon, and thus, should be avoid.
