Diversity effects of species and genotype mixtures in forests and tree plantations on ecosystem functioning


Die Auswirkungen von Biodiversität auf Ökosystemfunktionen ist eine der wichtigsten Fragestellungen der modernen Ökologie. Auf globaler Ebene ist die Reduktion des Anstiegs atmosphärischer CO2-Konzentrationen durch Speicherung von Kohlenstoff in terrestrischen Ökosystemen eine der bedeutsamsten Ökosystemdienstleistungen. Böden sind der größte terrestrische Speicher für Kohlenstoff. Dabei speist sich der organische Kohlenstoff im Boden zu einem erheblichen Teil aus dem ständigen Wachstum und Absterben der Feinwurzeln sowie der Exsudation von organischen Molekülen aus den Feinwurzeln. Für das oberirdische Wachstum von Wäldern wurde vielfach gezeigt, dass artenreiche, diverse Systeme mehr Biomasse produzieren und somit mehr Kohlenstoff speichern können. Für den unterirdischen Teil gibt es zum Einfluss der Diversität noch keine gesicherten Aussagen. In welcher Weise und in welchem Ausmaß verschiedene Baumarten und Baumartenmischungen auf die Feinwurzelprozesse, die wiederum den Kohlenstoffkreislauf beeinflussen, wirken ist weitgehend unklar. Das Projekt befasst sich mit diesem hochaktuellen Themengebiet und analysiert den Einfluss von verschiedenen Baumarten in Monokulturen und Mischbeständen auf die Kohlenstoffspeicherung in Böden und andere Ökosystemfunktionen. Hierbei sollen Wurzelinteraktionen auf verschiedenen Biodiversitätsebenen, von der genetischen Diversität (verschiedene Genotypen der gleichen Art) bis zu der Kombination von verschiedenen Arten, sowie die Auswirkungen von Trockenstress untersucht werden. Dazu werden in zwei gut etablierten Baumdiversitätsversuchen, in denen insgesamt 12 verschiedene Baumarten bzw. vier verschiedene Genotypen in allen möglichen Kombinationen gepflanzt wurden, und in bewirtschafteten Wäldern entlang eines Klimagradienten Untersuchungen zu den Feinwurzeldynamiken vorgenommen, welche insbesondere das Feinwurzelwachstum und –absterben sowie die Exsudation quantifizieren sollen. In zusätzlichen Gewächshausversuchen werden einzelne Prozesse unter kontrollierten Bedingungen verfolgt. Das übergeordnete Ziel ist es, zu prüfen, ob vielfältige Waldgesellschaften den Bodenkohlenstoffspeicher erhöhen oder verringern und inwiefern diese widerstandsfähiger gegen Trockenstress sind.
