The sequestration of carbon by forests and soils is one of the most important ecosystem services of terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore, large efforts have been undertaken and major political initiatives started to facilitate the storage of Carbon in forests and their products.

Professionals with competencies in project development for land-use based mitigation and with knowledge of related climate policy instruments at national and international levels are increasingly needed.

The Chair of Silviculture at Freiburg University offers – in cooperation with renowned partner organisations active in the land-use sector – a 3-week course in Carbon Forestry in between 19.02. and 09.03. 2018. This continuing education course has been offered for several years to practitioners and scientist in the forest project sector and was considered highly useful for their further career.

Participants of this module will learn the basics to develop and evaluate greenhouse mitigation projects. Project design documents of different types of land-use based carbon projects (REDD+, A/R, agroforestry & soils) will be analysed and validated in groups with presentations, plenum discussions and guest lectures. Using a local case study, participants will quantify C pools in afforested plantations in the field and quantify them in the lab. Furthermore, this module includes excursions and field trips to organizations engaged in carbon forestry.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Design carbon forestry projects and analyse land use project documents
  • Determine emission reduction effects and the amount of carbon credits generated by the projects, using appropriate methods and tools
  • Plan and undertake assessments of carbon pools and fluxes to monitor forestry and other land-use carbon projects
  • Apply safeguards to reduce risks in such projects
  • Develop approaches to maximize additional ecological and socioeconomic benefits
  • Critically evaluate climate change policies, including development perspectives of carbon forestry and emission reduction markets
  • Design financing mechanisms for forestry C projects
