The program “Form Zero” initiated by the new Brazilian Government to systematically fight hunger in Brazil raised global attention and sympathy. In the attempt to design efficient strategies to achieve this goal, the situation in the Amazon needs special attention. Once, because huge part of the rural populations suffer from precarious conditions regarding health, education and economy, but also because the existence of immense forested areas characterized by a huge diversity of timber and non-timber forest products. Regarding the question, in how far this richness may contribute to rural development, there are a number of quit distinct partly contradicting positions: some perceive forests as a barrier for development, while for others forests should be the motor. With the initial aim to present and discuss the various proposals and visions about the role of forests for poverty alleviation and rural development, CIFOR in partnership with EMBRAPA, GTZ, ProManejo/IBAMA and IMAZON invited to a Forum entitled “Forests, Management and Development: Option for the Amazon”. The event opened space for researchers, experts, politicians and rural development initiatives to present and discuss some of the most important proposals and opinions about this topic. The book presents the 13 speeches of the event as a contribution to better solutions for a sustainable development of the region.
